This is a piece of writing about the obsession with watching the lives of other people- often ones we don't even know personally instead of living our own.
Lyrics
There's no way we could've known that the wifi had gone down-
We were all still sleeping when the power flickered out.
And it wasn't till the morning when we couldn't get connected,
We all just sat and argued about who it was that might've wrecked it.
There was a notice in the paper, but I don't think any of us read it-
We might've intended to, but its easy to forget it,
When you're always so distracted, and only half awake,
And you've gotta check in on those strangers- and the pictures that they take.
You know I'd say we're moving backwards here- with any kind of social skill.
These kids are hardly talking, but they manage it with pills.
They say I just don't get it- and this is the way it is...
And they'll reach into their pockets to watch those other people live.
And I don't think I recall ever seeing that hardware store in town-
Ever looking so damn empty, and now they say they're shutting down,
That it's all this Prime delivery, and they just can't compete-
If there's a package on. your doorstep that's got everything you need.
And at the holiday parade, well hardly anyone was watching-
YouTube was blowing up these two celebrities were boxing,
And it was our charity event- mental health for teenage kids...
But they just could't get enough of watching those other people live.
I know all these young creatives, and they can't find work to save their souls.
AI is making doormats out of everything they do on their own.
And there's a new song on the radio, but a human didn't write it-
So at the next MTV award show, do the robots get invited?
I know we all like to complain about these problems while they grow,
But when it's time to sort em' out it's time we just don't have I suppose-
Or maybe is it this fight? And that there's not enough to give...
And so we just feel better watching other people live...
Oh I think it must be this fight. There's not enough to give.
So we all just feel better- watching other people live.
