Lyrics
she did her best to convince me- it all goes slow in these early days
knew it wasn’t just skin deep, the pins and needles and burning aches
and i was holding my breath for a minute, i asked will this ever stop?
she said no, it’s sorta like a background noise,
you turn it down, but it ain’t ever off… it ain’t ever off
he worked hard to find reason, and some way that i could relate
knew all about those changing seasons, the strong spirits they’d break
and i stared at my scars on the screen and said, hey will this ever end?
he said no, you see a mind in captivity-
knows it ain’t free, it can only pretend…
and they searched for improvement, any straw they could grasp
small change in my movements, new reports to compare with the last-
i was grinding my teeth through the work, i asked, are we ever finished?
they said no, it’s more like a bottomless pit,
you just dig and hope the efforts diminish… but they don’t diminish.
and you tried to distract me, from adding up all those broken parts-
you said think of the things that still could be, new ones you might start
and i was building that list in my mind, i asked will these pains ever fade?
you said no, they’re a lot like the sunrise,
sleep through some, but they’re back every day. they’re back every day.
so it was trying to bait me, into believing this wasn’t so bad
pretty good way to spend most of your day, work hard love all you have
and i was lying real still and i asked it, hey- could it ever be gone?
it said sure… just realize you can let go,
it’ll still feel like you’ve won
